Working around makeup artists for years means I’ve picked up so many tips and tricks that I often get asked about products and recommendations by friends – I’m definitely known as a bit of a beauty junkie! My makeup collection is forever expanding and I love finding new must haves but I thought I’d share with you what’s currently inside my make-up bag and the brands and products I can’t live without…
Prior to foundation I moisturise with Charlotte Tilbury magic cream and let that sit for a few minutes, then I apply Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk foundation which is my absolute fave and my go to for good coverage with a slight glowy look. Foundation is very personal and everyone has different needs – I personally don’t like a matte look for my skin but I know some people hate looking shiny so it really is a case of trial and error when finding your perfect foundation but I have to say this is mine! Other foundations I’ve come across and really liked are Nars Sheer Glow Foundation and Charlotte Tilbury’s range of foundation so I would recommend these too. I don’t really like to wear foundation everyday so for days when I’m not wearing full makeup I like to wear Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser or just a bit of Charlotte Tilbury wonderglow face primer for a relaxed dewy look.
When it comes to concealer I have always been in love with the NARS radiant creamy concealer but recently I discovered the NYX hd concealer wand and I have to say this has taken over as my fave. I find it lasts a bit longer on my skin than the Nars but they are very similar in consistency but quite a big difference in price so for great value for money at £6 I would definitely recommend the NYX concealer. I also love the MAC studio finish concealer which comes in a small pot and is great for covering up spots and blemishes as it is dryer than the other two liquid concealers mentioned which I prefer to use under my eyes so you’re not dragging the skin around as much.
As I previously mentioned I am a HUGE fan of that JLo glow and I love to have dewy skin so I’m not a huge powder wearer – however when I want my makeup to last for an event or night out then I will add some Laura Mercier loose setting powder to a few areas to set my makeup and reduce too much shine in spots you don’t want it! I lightly brush the translucent powder on to my forehead, chin, nose and anywhere else I think needs it but not too much as I don’t like to look cakey. I also sometimes use the yellowy powder in my Anastasia Beverly Hills contour palette for this purpose and I find this brightens your under eye more than the Laura Mercier powder.
Highlighters & Blushers
As you can imagine this is one of my favourite items of makeup – I’m allll about the highlight! I like the Iconic liquid in original shade sometimes mixed in with my foundation or dotted on my cheekbones after my makeup. I also like Becca’s range of powder highlighters they are a gorgeous consistency and go on so well with a fan brush – Mac also do some great highlighters and so do Benefit.
I’m not a fan of strong blushers but I do like a wash of soft coral over the apples of the cheeks to make me look more alive! I love the Benefit coralista blusher and also the Makeup Geek blush pans which you can buy individually and put in your own magnetic palette – great for travelling.
I usually dust a very light amount of bronzer over my base makeup to set it and then use the Anastasia Beverly Hills contour kit to darken and lighten certain areas of my face. Benefit hoola bronzer is great for this and for a more dramatic contour Clinique’s range of ‘chubby sticks’ are easy to use and blendable.
I personally love a 90’s soft, bushy, natural shaped brow and I’m not in to super dark tattooed severe looking eyebrows. I think Jlo (can you tell I have a beauty crush on her) nails it and I would love to see her brow artist!! I used to have HD brows done religiously but my brow woman stopped doing it so I stopped and don’t really do anything to my brows now and I actually prefer them when I look at photos. The products I use on them are Anastasia Beverly Hills dipbrow pomade and this brow brush, I just fill in a few gaps I have and use the brush to comb them through as my brows are quite thick naturally. I also use the Anastasia Beverly Hills clear brow gel to set them if they are looking particularly bushy!
I go through phases of loving different eye shadows but they are usually always around the brown/nudey and rose gold type colour palettes. I find these are good for day and you can add more drama to it for evening looks. I sometimes just wear a bit of bronzer on my eyes in the day with a smudge of black eye kohl pencil for a bit of definition or if I want my eyes to stand out more then I will do a winged flick of liquid liner for more of a cat eye look with lots of mascara.
After trying lash extensions for the first time a few months ago I’m now a bit of an addict, my own lashes have always been quite long but I just love the easiness of getting up and knowing your eyes are done especially on holiday and throughout summer! I should probably give them a break at some point but I’m going to find it hard to give them up…
I do love adding a pop of colour for events or nights out though and I think a bright red lip and a winged cat eye is a beauty classic! I love Mac lady danger for a bright red and I also love a deep burgundy lip in Winter, NARS lipstick in Bette is a great colour.
I have to say I love buying makeup brushes, they make all the difference in how your makeup goes on and perfecting a look. Mac do some great brushes as do Nars and Charlotte Tilbury. If I need my makeup to really last then I finish off with Urban Decay all nighter setting spray which is amazing.
This is a rounded up list of my makeup essentials, I’m by no means an expert but I’m happy to answer any questions you have so please feel free to get in touch! Amy x
